Description
The Red Propellers are a Stroud / Bristol UK quartet inspired by the music of the late 1970's New York City 'punk' scene.
The Red Propellers play a rock music that is inspired by, draws on and reinvents the music of the Velvet Underground and many of the New York bands that inhabited the city during its art rock and post-punk phases, including Television, Patti Smith and Suicide. Whilst there are perhaps hundreds of known and unknown bands with similar inclinations, I am fascinated by the mix of homage, influences and reinvention on show in this band's music. The official band biography is that the Red Propellers was formed as a music collective in 2012 by vocalist James Dick and artist David Anslow (aka TRXTR, an artist whose 'work questions whether dystopia is closer to reality than we realize' [Red Propeller Gallery). They originally conceived the collective as a house band for the Red Propeller Gallery in Kingsbridge, Devon, with musicians coming and going as needed. The two spent a year writing songs together, which were released as a self-titled debut album 2013 by Rollercoaster Records Since then, Anslow left the band, as commuting from Devon to Bristol, where the band became based, was unsustainable. He was replaced by guitarist and songwriter David McEvoy, and the band has gone on to release ten collections of songs. As the music progressed they became more ambitious and decided to pursue a more orthodox band route, playing gigs and making albums. James Dick came to England as a street performer, having previously worked with the radical and experimental Bread and Puppet Theatre, dancing on stilts to punk music or with live street bands. Part of the band's appeal - like the Velvet Underground, Patti Smith and Television - is their re-visitation of the past, remaining it for the now. Intrigued not only by Dick's statement that 'many avenues of rebellious art are available for folk willing to take chances' and their recent music sums that up. The current line-up comprises Keith Bailey (drums), James Dick (vocals and lyrics), Jim Dyke (bass) and David McEvoy (guitar).
