Description
n Taliban-ruled Kabul, a tragic event links two couples as they struggle with love, loss, and hope under oppression.
The Swallows of Kabul is a powerful animated drama adapted from Yasmina Khadra's acclaimed novel, set in Kabul during the summer of 1998 under Taliban rule. Young lovers Zunaira and Mohsen dream of a future free from violence, oppression, and religious extremism, while prison guard Atiq struggles to care for his terminally ill wife Mussarat. Following one tragic, impulsive act, the lives of both couples become inextricably linked as they confront injustice, sacrifice, and the struggle to preserve hope in a society stripped of compassion and freedom.
Rendered in stunning watercolor-inspired animation, the film explores the emotional and moral consequences of life under authoritarian rule while emphasizing the resilience of the human spirit. Directors Zabou Breitman and Éléa Gobbé-Mévellec faithfully adapt Khadra's celebrated novel into an emotionally resonant feature examining love, dignity, resistance, and survival against overwhelming oppression.
Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, the film also received recognition at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and earned nominations for Best Animated Film at both the César Awards and the European Film Awards. Its mature storytelling and painterly visual style have established it as one of the most acclaimed animated literary adaptations of recent years.
