In November 2004, the passing of John Balance marked the definitive end of Coil. Deeply shaken by this loss, I decided to honor his memory by forming *This Immortal Coil*, a project that brought together musicians--most unfamiliar with Coil's work--to create classical reinterpretations of their music.
In 2008, I met P. Christopherson at the Sonic Villette festival and handed him a CD with early recordings. Two weeks later, his email arrived: *'It is the first time somebody with musical sensibility and talent has put so much time and effort into covering Coil songs. It totally passes my hairs on the back of your neck standing up!'* His words were the best validation I could have hoped for.A year later, *This Immortal Coil - The Dark Age of Love* was released, featuring a remarkable ensemble: Y. Naim, B. Prince Billy, M. Elliott, Y. Tiersen. Christopherson called it *'the most extraordinary, beautiful, and moving reinterpretations of Coil I have ever heard.'*
In 2010, Christopherson's passing was another devastating loss. Though I considered a tribute, grief left me unable to proceed. However, in 2011, my meeting with D. Chalmin and K. Labèque, who expressed their admiration for *This Immortal Coil*, planted the seeds for a potential continuation..During the 2020 lockdown, living in my orchard cabin, I found myself haunted by *Where Are You*. Revisiting Coil's catalog, I assembled a tracklist and reached out to potential contributors. In the midst of this, I stumbled upon Coil's watch, engraved with *The World Ended A Long Time Ago*--a sign to proceed.t.By June 2022, after years of meticulous work, the second album, *The World Ended A Long Time Ago*, was finally mixed by D. Chalmin. It stands as a tribute that, like the first, I am immensely proud of. I truly believe John and Peter would be too.
