Description
The long awaited follow up to 2009's cult tribute to Coil that enlisted Yan Tiersen, Bonnie Prince Billy, Yaël Naïm and more...
In November 2004, the death of Jhonn Balance put an end to Coil. Upset, I decided to pay tribute to this unique group by creating a project with musicians unfamiliar with their world, to offer 'classic' versions.
In 2008, I gave Peter Christopherson a record of the first tracks from This Immortal Coil. His feedback was overwhelming: he spoke of 'extraordinary, beautiful and moving reinterpretations of Coil'. The Dark Age of Love was released in 2009 with a supergroup featuring Yaël Naim, Bonnie Prince Billy, Matt Elliott, Yann Tiersen and others. Enthusiastically, Peter put it up for sale on Coil's website, The Threshold House.
November 2010, another shock: Peter Christopherson leaves us. The idea of a tribute haunted me, but grief prevailed. In 2017, while recording Orchard, I reunited Aidan Baker, Gaspar Claus. We record Where Are You, masterfully mixed by David Chalmin, who encourages me to continue.
In 2018, I meet Massimo Pupillo (Zü), who tells me about This Immortal Coil with admiration. Thighpaulsandra tells me that Peter used to play our tracks before his concerts.
2020: In the confines of my cabin, I listen to Where Are You again. The desire is reborn. I choose tracks and contact David Chalmin. Massimo Pupillo gathers musicians, including Márton Csókás and Ulver, great admirers of Coil. This new album is made without any fixed respect, faithful to the spirit of the band.
June 2022, after much hard work, The World Ended A Long Time Ago is completed. December 2022, release of the LP, CD and box set, including a reissue of the first album and instrumental versions. A project I'm proud of, and I'm sure Jhonn and Peter would be too...
