Description
Intimate, dreamy folk pop from Portland that promises to soothe your soul.
O Solferino is the debut album from Portland dream pop /indie folk duo Time & The Bell. Band members Allisa and Mandy are longtime friends who have been making music together for over half their lives. Inspired by the blood harmonies of the Everly Brothers, the chamber pop experiments of Björk, and the lyrical intimacy of Elliott Smith, these women and their collaborators have created a meditative collection of songs full of raw and honest beauty.
Due to illness, death, birth, and a house fire that completely destroyed the basement studio where they tracked the bulk of these songs, O Solferino endured many starts and stops along its path to existence. One of the only objects recovered from the fire was an external hard drive containing their music. Eventually Time & The Bell linked up with producer Adam Lee (Built to Spill, Portugal. The Man, Decemberists) who helped polish up these tracks and make them soar.
It's obvious that great deal of time and intention went into the making of O Solferino. Several guest musicians lent their skills to songs which range from the stripped-down minimalism of 'No Harm' to the intricately lush and layered 9-minute orchestral opus 'Swan Song'; the latter of which features French horn, cello, harpsichord, and a 6-foot-long lute called a theorbo. There is a lot of call and response to the melodies, echoing the album's dual message of grief and redemption. It opens up to you slowly, and rewards repeat listens. Haunting and healing-- If you let it, O Solferino will wrap you gently in its embrace and soothe your aching soul.
