The selection of tracks includes compositions by all the musicians, testimony to the trio's vitality. Perazzo contributes with Back at the Right Spot!, written in one go, on the wave of enthusiasm, after attending a Williams concert; with the dreamy Alba sul Mare, enriched by a long solo by Williams; and the ethereal Ricordi. For his part, Williams presents two of his classics:Where Giants Dwell and Christina.
''Buster is a first-take kind of musician,' recalls Perazzo, 'who prefers the spontaneity of the first performance... Sometimes we recorded a tune several times, but in the end, almost always, we chose the first take.' Cardillo signs the atypical Kind of Blues which is structured on only eleven bars and in which the penultimate one is in 3/4 time. 'I wanted to give the traditional twelve-bar blues structure a touch of 'modernity' by altering the form and playing with the rhythmic displacement of melodic cells', recalls Cardillo. The fast-paced Soul-Leo is a classic by pianist Mulgrew Miller in which the groove dictates the law. Footprint, on the other hand, is a heartfelt tribute to the memory of Wayne Shorter, long time friend and collaborator of Williams, who had passed away a few months before the recording. Regarding this piece, Perazzo recalls that '... I was doing an introduction and suddenly Buster came in, almost taking me by surprise. We played to see what would happen and that take was the good one'. The music that this album returns to us is fresh and spontaneous, direct and sincere. A modern and elegant jazz that translates into music what Williams has always said: 'Music is not what comes from the head, but what comes from the heart,' the double bass player declared. 'What comes from the head does not necessarily move people, but what comes from the heart certainly does'.'
