For the attentive observer of the music scene, Trance Groove is far from a new name. Originally assembled as a one-night-only live project, the group first came together for a legendary appearance at the Ballroom Blitz in December 1992. But the chemistry was undeniable - and what started as a spontaneous collaboration soon evolved into a long-term musical endeavor. Founding members Stefan Krachten (drums), Dal Martino (bass), Reiner Winterschladen (trumpet), Helmut Zerlett (keyboards), Jürgen Dahmen (piano), DJ Heli (turntables), Samson Gassama (percussion), and then-guitarist Matthias Keul decided to keep playing together - and the overwhelmingly positive response from early audiences proved them right.
Their debut album Solid Gold Easy Action (1994) quickly earned underground status as an insider tip among connoisseurs of groove-infused instrumental music. The band's name has always reflected its sound: deep rhythmic foundations built on tight basslines and precise drums, layered with warm keys, tasteful samples, and virtuosic improvisation. This distinctive mix helped Trance Groove rise from local cult status to gaining recognition across Europe.
Their 1996 follow-up album Paramount featured guest appearances from Blaine Reininger (Tuxedomoon), Nicole Meyer (Fred Banana Combo), and guitarist Axel Heilecker - and pushed the group further onto international stages, including a U.S. audience and an Indie Award nomination from the AFIM.
Now, with Musique Légère, the group returns in full force - this time with a unique twist: collaborations with producers and remix artists from across the ambient, downtempo, and dance music spectrum. The result is a vibrant and stylistically diverse album that reinterprets the Trance Groove ethos for a new generation. Fans of electronic crossover projects will recognize many of the producers involved, while longtime followers of the band will find surprising new perspectives on their signature sound.
