The commissioned work of the Jyväskylä Parish and the Jyväskylä Symphony from 2000 offers a variation on traditional passion compositions. The three-part Easter oratorio Triduum Paschale is one of the most extensive compositions in the production of composer Pekka Kostiainen. Divided into three parts, the work begins with the dramatic Maundy Thursday Mass, continues with the gloomy Good Friday Word Service and ends with a joyful, hope-filled Easter Mass.Throughout history, various liturgical works have been composed for Christian Easter services, and the passion about the suffering and death of Christ in particular has established itself in concert halls as a form of composition. Central to this, of course, is J. S. Bachâs famous Matthew and John Passions, which have paved the way for later passion compositions. However, Bach's production also includes the lesser-known Easter Oratorio, which tells the message of the resurrection instead of death, and also wanted to include the message of Easter in its entirety, not just one part, in the work commissioned from Kostiainen.Triduum Paschale premiered at Taulumäki Church in Jyväskylä on Easter day, April 23, 2000, and was conducted by Markus Lehtinen.
