Description

Rachmaninov's Piano Trios Nos. 1 and 2 reveal the piano as dramatic axis in two elegiac works shaped by memory, mourning and shadow.

Piano Trios Nos. 1 & 2 brings together Sergei Rachmaninov's two Trios élégiaques, youthful yet emotionally expansive works that stand among the most powerful statements of late-Romantic chamber music. Though often overshadowed by his concertos and solo piano repertoire, these trios reveal a composer already in full command of his melodic gift, harmonic language, and large-scale architectural thinking--while also exposing a deeply personal, elegiac voice shaped by loss, memory, and homage.

The Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor (1892), cast in a single movement, is an early but remarkably assured work. Structured broadly along sonata principles, it unfolds as a continuous arc of lyrical intensity, with the piano taking a leading role while the strings engage in expressive dialogue. Its language is already unmistakably Rachmaninov: long-breathed melodies, rich harmonic shifts, and a pervasive sense of melancholic introspection.

The Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor (1893) expands this emotional and structural scope considerably. Written in direct response to the death of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the work stands as a memorial in the tradition of Tchaikovsky's own Trio Op. 50, even adopting its dedication 'to the memory of a great artist.' The opening Moderato establishes a grave, almost symphonic breadth, with thematic material that moves fluidly between instruments in a tightly woven narrative. The central Quasi variazione unfolds as an extended sequence of variations--each a distinct emotional tableau, ranging from intimate lyricism to dramatic turbulence--while the final Allegro risoluto brings virtuosic drive and cyclical recall, returning to the opening material in a gesture of profound closure.

Across both works, Rachmaninov challenges the traditional balance of the piano trio. The piano part is often orchestral in scale, demanding not only virtuosity but also structural awareness, while the violin and cello must match this intensity with sustained lyrical presence. The result is a chamber texture that feels symphonic in ambition yet retains the intimacy of three voices bound by shared expression.

Trio Kobalt--formed in 2021 at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano--approaches this repertoire with a level of cohesion and maturity that belies its relatively recent formation. The ensemble, comprising Irenè Fiorito (violin), Lorenzo Guida (cello), and Riccardo Ronda (piano), has quickly established itself as one of the most compelling young chamber groups on the European scene. Their training includes advanced study with Pavel Berman, the Trio di Parma at the Accademia Perosi, and the Trio Wanderer in Paris--placing them within a distinguished lineage of chamber music pedagogy.

Their rapid ascent has been marked by significant competition success, including First Prize and Audience Prize at the European 'Gasparo da Salò' Competition, the AMUR Prize, the Renzo Giubergia Prize, and the Filippo Nicosia Chamber Music Award--leading directly to this recording. Their appointment as Ensemble in Residence at the Festival International de Piano de La Roque d'Anthéron further underscores their international recognition, making them the first Italian ensemble to receive this distinction.

As performers, Trio Kobalt combines technical precision with a strong emphasis on ensemble balance and tonal blend. Their interpretative approach favors clarity of structure and emotional directness, allowing the dramatic contrasts of Rachmaninov's writing to emerge without excess. Each member contributes a distinct voice--Fiorito's lyrical violin line, Guida's warm and grounded cello tone, and Ronda's expansive yet controlled pianism--resulting in a unified sound that serves the music's narrative arc.

This recording positions Rachmaninov's trios not as peripheral works, but as central statements within his output--bridging the intimate world of chamber music with the emotional and structural breadth of his larger orchestral and pianistic works.
