The German Abbess Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was one of the most highly-revered women of her day, renowned for her broad erudition and as a mystic working with religion, literature, music and natural history. Hildegard's amazing compositions were revealed to her in visions she called Symphonia harmoniae (aelestium reuelationum - the symphony of the harmony of celestial revelations. She did not, in other words, look upon them as her own personal achievements, instead regarding herself as a source of light and harmony, as an instrument of God . 'Just as a trumpet only makes sounds, but does not cause them. Someone blows into it in order to make the sound.' Her visions did not appear before Hildegard in a trance; they ~ame to her while she was awake and in full command of her faculties. She saw vivid lights and likened the luminosity of her visions to the shade of the lightoflife that freed her from pain and melancholy. In 1141 a decisive change came about in Hildegard's life when she felt ordered by God to note her visions down. Her writings and compositions were later presented to the Archbishop and Cathedral Chapter ofMainzand later to Pope Eugene III , who sent a clerical delegation to question her. As a result, she was given permission to make public all that she felt in her heart. Hildegard reported that her works were born of inner anguish, through thanl(sgiving, song and instruments. The themes of her texts are creation and redemption, God and the world, the Virgin, angels and saints, and the word made flesh .
