Concerts of early music featuring works by composers of different eras have, as a rule, observed the practice of proceeding chronologically, usually from the oldest to the youngest. The order of the works on this disc may therefore seem somewhat curious, since the first to be given a hearing is the son, and only then the father. There are two reasons for this: first, I see no reason for adhering slavishly to disputable conventions such as that just described, and second, It seems possible in the light of contemporary research that Johann Sebastian Bach composed his sonatas BWV 1028 and BWV 1029 as late as around 1740, only a few years before the C major sonata (H 558) by hiS son. The first of the items on this disc, the sonata for harpsichord and Violin (H 502) written by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach at the age of 16, may thus in fact well be the oldest. - Veli-Markus Tapio
