Jimmie Davis was well known for many things, including his writing, singing and acting. As a two-term governor of the state of Louisiana, he was renowned in the political arena as well. But to The Village Singers and a host of others, he will be remembered as a friend and mentor.We thank Alton and Colleen Templet for introducing Jimmie to our music and later introducing Jimmie to us. As a result of these events, we were privileged to sing every year, for several years, at the annual Jimmie Davis Homecoming, held at Quitman, LA, his birthplace. It was at the homecomings and other similar events that he made comments such as “I am your number one fan,” “You are my kind of people and you sing my kind of music,” and “I like telling people about you.”Visiting in his home and office, where we sang harmony with him on his favorite song – “Someone to Care,” are memories that we will treasure forever.Jimmie helped us in our gospel singing career with no thought of personal gain, and for that we are eternally grateful. We feel his many attributes can be summed up thusly – Jimmie Davis, a southern gentlemen.This is but a small token of our appreciation when compared with other accolades he has been given, but this tribute is a mere “thanks”…'til we meet again. – The Village Singers
