Flying High With Vince Maloy: The Complete Recordings collects the entire known recorded output of obscure rockabilly singer Vince Maloy, bringing together 12 tracks originally scattered across six exceptionally scarce singles issued by six different labels. Bear Family Records' 10-inch vinyl anthology is devoted to the rawest end of vintage rockabilly: hard-driving performances, primitive recording techniques and small-label records that have become elusive artifacts of the original rock & roll era.
Maloy's brief recording career produced only a handful of releases, but among them are records prized for their uninhibited rockabilly sound. The collection includes both versions of "Soda Pop," the Tait recording and the later Felsted version, alongside the drag-racing rocker "Draggin' All Night," "Hubba Hubba Ding Ding," "Flying Love," "Crazy About You," "I've Been Around Your Door … Before" and "I Don't Know Why." Several performances draw on the raucous rhythm-and-blues tradition typified by "Drinkin' Wine Spo-De-O-Dee," illustrating the close relationship between R&B, country and early rockabilly.
The centerpiece for serious collectors is the extraordinarily rare Web Records single pairing "Wine Bop Bop" with "Honey Baby." The original WEB 1109 pressing is among Maloy's hardest records to locate and was poorly recorded, mastered and manufactured even by the rough standards of independent rockabilly singles of its era. Compounding the problem, many surviving copies reportedly contain a pressing defect that causes a skip. After an extended search, Bear Family located a clean-playing copy and used it as the source for this edition, allowing both sides to join Maloy's other recordings in one remastered collection.
Presented as a 12-track 10-inch vinyl LP with a substantial 12-page booklet, Flying High With Vince Maloy: The Complete Recordings runs approximately 27 minutes. Rather than smoothing away the primitive character of these recordings, the collection preserves the wild, homemade quality that gives Maloy's music its appeal. For rockabilly collectors accustomed to digging beyond the canonical names, this is an opportunity to hear the complete legacy of a genuinely obscure performer whose tiny discography contains some remarkably tough early rock & roll.
