This new collection presents Swahili popular music from the eastern coast of Africa
Bi Kidude, ''La Petite Chose'', whose real name is Fatma Bint Baraka, began singing in the 1920s. In 2005, she received the Womex World Music Award, recognizing her exemplary career as an ambassador of African music. Bi Kidude was first a singer of taarab, the most popular style in the region, then of msondo, initiation song for young girls. After the Second World War, she returned to taarab as part of the popular women's clubs at the time. Iconic singer for the entire region, Bi Kidude is also a recognized healer. The recordings presented here retrace his career over the past twenty years. Bi Kidude is accompanied by different ensembles including the famous Culture Musical Club, Zanzibar Taarab All Stars and Afro-Arab Groove.
